Allstones
Lake and Peak Trail
Many visitors consider
this to be the most scenic day hike along the David Thompson Corridor.
Autumn is the time to be out here - the fall colours are breathtaking.
This trail head is a ten minute drive from the lodge. Start your ascent
into the cool forest until you reach the tree line. Along the way you
will catch a few glimpses of Abraham Lake behind you but the most spectacular
part is along a traverse below Allstone Peak in a stand of small Aspen
which glow in the autumn sun. With
a little luck, you will meet some Mountain Sheep on the way. As you get
to the small lake tucked away in the forest, enjoy a picnic break before
scrambling to the peak.
The vegetation changes to alpine here and the pastel colours of leafs
and rocks are a painters / photographers delight. The panoramic view shows
the different topography of the foothills and front ranges and at your
feet you will notice the broad scar of a mudslide which devastated the
forest along Mud Creek years ago. Return the way you came or clamber down
and follow mud creek back to the Highway.
