Review your habits

Conservation is an attitude! Challenge yourself to make a difference!

Technical advances can significantly reduce our impact on the environment with energy efficient appliances / vehicles, improved insulation of our buildings, using renewable energy sources or environmentally friendly cleaning agents.

However, the biggest difference we can make is reviewing our own actions and habits on a daily basis. Each and everyone of us should make it a personal goal to reduce our resource consumption by one third. If you are committed and take a consistent approach, you will be surprised how easy it is. There are hundreds of opportunities every day to reach your goal:

  • How many lights do you leave on in your home or office when you really only need one to work, read or eat? Turn off those extra lights!

  • Time yourself the next time you have a shower. Some people pride themselves of taking half hour showers. Imagine the water and power they could save with a five minute shower which is just as effective. Look at other water uses in kitchen and laundry.

  • Tend to walk around barefoot and in a T-shirt in winter? Turning down the thermostat by 10% (and wearing proper attire) saves far more than 10% in energy (and pollution) and keeps you healthier as well.

  • Review your driving habits. How many trips are not essential and could be combined? How often do you idle your vehicle for more than a minute?

  • Using a toaster to burn your bread! The power used for 10 minutes of toasting can provide 12 hours of light with an energy saving light bulb! What is more important? Why not buy some healthy, fresh bread instead?
