Historic Mine Site in Nordegg

By mid May the local museum and historic coal mine in Nordegg are open again to visitors.

After the turn of last century, Nordegg was a bustling mining town with over 2,000 people living and working here. Coal produced here was to fuel the expansion of railways and development in Western Canada and the US.

In the 1950's, after a fire and renovation of the mine, the market for coal collapsed and the Brazeau Colliery was shut down. Today only about sixty permanentBrazeau Colliery.residents await the revival of the community. A visit to and tour of the mine site is a must for anyone interested in history and industrial processes. Brazeau Colliery has been designated as a provincial and federal site of historic interest.

Stop for a light lunch at the Coalminers Cafe. On your way to Nordegg, visit some of the other sites of interest off Highway 11, such as the Bighorn Dam Information Centre and Crescent Falls on the Bighorn River. Nordegg is a 30 minute drive from Aurum Lodge.
