February
Across the lake
to Douglasia Forest
Leave your car keys
in the room for this hike to one of the lesser known natural features
of Bighorn Country.
By February, Abraham Lake will normally be covered by a massive ice sheet.
Once you have verified the safety of the ice conditions, dress warmly
and head out to traverse this vast expanse of frozen water. The winds
will generally keep it free of snow and you may find that what looks like
a 20 minute stroll is in fact a 30 minute hike which will take you between
one and two hours...
Marvel at the
patterns in the ice, the cracks, the faults, frozen bubbles which look
like pancakes and the frozen waves undulating on the surface. This is
nature's art at its best!
Once you reach
the other side, enter one of the last large remaining stands of douglas
fir on the Eastern slopes and find yourselves an elevated spot to enjoy
the magnificent view back towards the lodge, Mt. Stelfox, Vision Quest
and Mt. Abraham. If you are really adventurous, you can hire a guide and
ascend Mt. Michener as well.
